FDHS and CGWA Ribbon Cutting Ceremony

This week FCPS unveiled its newest school, Frederick Douglass High School (FDHS).  FDHS will also serve as the new home to our all male secondary school, Carter G. Woodson Academy (CGWA).  The ribbon cutting ceremony was more than just a moment in time, it served as a moment in history.  A history that has divided our nation along racial lines for far too long.  A history that has used the power of law to establish a segregated school system using the doctrine separate but equal; until the Supreme Court ruled in Brown (1954) that separate was inherently unequal.

Fayette county desegregated its schools in the early 1970s when an African American student named Helen, who was a student at the old FDHS, integrated the schools by attending LHS.  The re-establishment of FDHS and GGWA clearly shows that we are stronger together.  Kudos to the FDHS alumni and all others who came out to celebrate this historic occasion!
