Wrapping up the Oct. 10th 2018 SBDM Meeting

The October 10th Site Based Decision Making Council meeting began with adoption of the day’s schedule and of the minutes for September 12th. This was followed by the monthly good news report, which started with the HC win over Scott County on the road in football, Marching Band received first place in their competition, and that Volleyball won the city cup. It was also reported that the total number of tardies given is down 100 tardies from last year.

Next topic was on the growing number of students receiving referrals for leaving campus during lunch to go and get fast food. This is prohibited, because HC is a closed campus-meaning that students cannot leave unless a guardian signs them out.

TSI status was discussed next. For those who are unaware, the Kentucky Board of Education instituted a new ranking system designed to help target and provide aid to low performing demographics in schools to boost the overall system. Three years after becoming a TSI school, if the school has not successfully raised that demographic’s testing, then the school is provided with direct state assistance with state workers.

HC is a TSI school in one category, but it was mentioned at the meeting that HC was borderline in others. Potential solutions were discussed briefly before moving onto the next part of the agenda.

Next was an on-the-spot entry, ESS. ESS was taken over by Counselor Rachel Howard, and a plan was presented to the council even though council has no control over it monetarily. Principal Paul Little wants to continue to maintain transparency throughout the school.

Following was the student report by Merrick Moore. Moore reported that the freshmen were not aware of the various tutoring opportunities available to them. SBDM members briefly brainstormed on how to remedy the issue.

Moore also presented a plan to highlight a couple of clubs per week to get more students involved at HC.

Budget was next on the docket, and various clubs were discussed. Fundraisers were also approved.

The meeting was then adjourned.

The next SBDM meeting open to the public will be held on Wednesday November 14th in the Henry Clay Library. The meeting will start promptly at 5:30, and anyone wishing to comment must sign in at the time of the meeting.
