Wrapping up the Aug 28 2019 SBDM meeting

The Aug. 28 SBDM meeting began with the adoption of agenda and the adoption of minutes. It was then followed by the good news report. The volleyball team received the 2018-2019 AVCA Team Academic Award and James and Evan Winkler scored a 36 on the ACT.

HC Parent Representative Kim Thompson presented an anti-vaping campaign. Thompson suggested putting up posters in the main lobby or cafeteria to raise awareness about the dangers of vaping.

The ninth grade task force was then discussed. This school year HC has 644 ninth graders, including those who have had to repeat ninth grade. Concern for those students was mentioned. There was a successful freshman orientation and parent night, while the ninth grade field trip to the Henry Clay Estate is being planned.

MTSS, Multi-tiered system of support, provides extra support help to students who might need additional assistance with their daily school life. Plans to help those who are repeating ninth grade by working with a new mental health specialist were discussed. Concern for the amount of stress students have and offering ways to release stress were discussed .

Staffing wise, HC is cashing in a .5 clerical position in exchange for a .7 guidance counselor to help with things like testing accommodations. Concern for completely restaffing all lost positions from the last few years was brought up.

A new program being brought to HC is EOS, a hall pass and behavior accountability system. Concern for interruption of instruction was mentioned and proposed, as was getting each classroom a chromebook and a scanner so students can use their ID badges to scan themselves into the system when in the hallway. Along with additional safety precautions, the metal detectors are scheduled to arrive the 16th or 17th of September but no dates are definite. HC will receive 18 total metal detectors, seven or eight in the front lobby and nine or ten in the big connector.

The SCIF budget and activities were accepted. Field trips for Key Club, Arts and Humanities, Golf, and Band were approved. Fundraisers for Beta Club, Y-Club, DanceBlue, Speech and Debate, Special Education Classroom, Cheer, Dance, Cross Country, Golf, Model UN, and Soccer were approved. The meeting was concluded with the student report from HC Student Representative Grace Ramey. Ramey spoke about the upcoming spirit week and the homecoming details were being planned out. Ramey also mentioned the amount of school spirit the student section has been exhibiting this school year.

The next SBDM meeting will be held Sept. 11 at 5:30 in the HC library.
