HC’s Ultimate Frisbee Team gains popularity

Judging by the full front field three times a week, HC’s Ultimate Frisbee Club has become increasingly popular this school year. Averaging about 20 students, this is the largest team HC’s Ultimate Frisbee has ever seen.

For those who are unaware of Ultimate Frisbee’s rules, one team throws the frisbee and wherever it lands, the other team takes it. Once a player has the frisbee, they cannot move and must pass it to a teammate. There are two different positions; the handler and the cutter. The handler throws the frisbee, while the cutter catches and makes runs. Players have the ability to call their own fouls.

HC’s Ultimate Frisbee Team participated in a tournament at the University of Kentucky with seven other teams on October 5th. The tournament was a fundraiser for UK’s Women’s Ultimate Frisbee Team. This was the first time they got to showcase their skills competitively.

“It was really fun,” HC Junior Andrea Hicks. “We played every team that was older than us. They were all in college or out of college. We were the only high school team.”

The team size has increased over the past years. This year features an overall stronger team due to frequent practices and a more competitive nature.

“This year, the team has focused on improving specific skills in players,” HC Junior and Team Captain William Begley said. “It’s led to more well-rounded players. It benefits the team as a whole.”

Many of the players are very passionate about their sport, attending every practice and working hard to show their skillset.

“[Practices] are kind of intense,” HC Junior Annie Bohannon said. “Everybody is very competitive; it’s really fun.”

Ultimate Frisbee has flexible obligation and any student is welcome to play. For any students interested, practices are every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 3:30-4:30 in the front field.
