Wrapping up the Oct 2019 SBDM meeting

by Adrienne Ingram and Nina Rennard

The Oct. 9 SBDM meeting began with the adoption of the day’s agenda and the previous meeting’s minutes which were accepted. The meeting was then followed by the good news report. The marching band is having a successful season and seniors are getting help with applying for college. Football, Cheer, FCA, and Dance Team had successful fundraisers at Skyline Chili. 20 football players went to read at Breckinridge Elementary School, while the ninth graders had a safe field trip to the Henry Clay Estate, and Student Council had a successful blood drive.

The meeting then continued with the School Profile Report. HC is one of the top three high schools in the Fayette County district, scoring above average in every category except career readiness. A new teaching position was hired, welcoming a new English teacher, Rhonda Jelf. The EOS System has been able to help monitor students. Soon, computers and scanners will be in every classroom.

Another point of interest was the reduction of freshmen failure rate and disruptive behavior. PBIS has improved the behavior of students, with 98.4% of students without referrals. SAFE has been more effective as well. In addition, counselors are working on increasing graduation rates and career readiness.

The SCIF budget and activities were accepted. Field trips for Y Club and Boys Basketball were approved. Fundraisers for FCA, Baseball, and Track and Field were approved. The meeting was concluded with the student report by HC Student Representative Grace Ramey. Ramey spoke about a leadership program to help drop discipline problems and also reported that HC had a successful homecoming.

The next SBDM meeting will be held Nov. 13 at 5:30 in the HC library.
