Female journalist offers her perspective on the Trump rally

On Nov 4, President Donald Trump held a rally endorsing Kentucky’s incumbent governor, Matt Bevin. People from all over Kentucky came to Rupp Arena in downtown Lexington to support their Republican politicians: Attorney General Daniel Cameron, Senator Rand Paul, Former Governor Matt Bevin, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, and most notably, President Donald Trump.

I was astounded by the sheer amount of hate Trump and his supporters directed towards those who disagreed with their conservative values. As a student journalist, I thought his comments towards the media were particularly alarming, with the crowd chiming in accompanied by angry slurs of “fake news” and “do your job.” I hope that one day those who believe that reputable news sources are reporting fake news come to terms and realize that the root of all of the problems leads back to our President and his false claims. For someone who goes on and on about fake news in the media, our President has repeatedly used Twitter as a platform to share his lies.

At the rally, the President and his fellow Republican politicians did nothing but bash on liberal values and Democratic lawmakers who disagreed with the Conservatives. I thought that it was interesting how Trump repeated the same things just to get more cheers from the crowd. He brought up strong female Democrats, such as Nancy Pelosi, “Crooked Hillary,” and Amy McGrath. Once these names were mentioned, the arena was filled with “boos” and Trump responding with a smug smile. As a female, I’m disgusted with how females are treated in politics. Time and time again, Trump has shown his disrespect towards women by treating them like objects.

At the end of the rally, I found myself wishing that I were standing with the protesters. I have always been an advocate for human rights and being at the rally made me realize how strongly I believe in progressive values. I was sickened by how anyone who spoke out against him was treated.

I will be able to vote in the next presidential election, and my vote will not go to Donald Trump.
