Thanksgiving shouldn’t be skipped

Thanksgiving is a unique American holiday celebrated nowhere else on Earth. Yet across the States, people and companies are skipping Thanksgiving in favor of celebrating Christmas for up to two months. Thanksgiving is a historical holiday that tells an important story, inspires a good lesson, and is filled with delicious food and festive events to be celebrated by all.

Thanksgiving tells an important story of how two very different groups, the Patuxet and the Pilgrims helped and supported each other despite their differences. In today’s world there is so much negativity and fighting between groups just because they are different or believe different things, and a holiday that is important to remind people to work together.

The holiday not only teaches people to put aside their differences, but it also encourages the moral lesson of being thankful for what you have. The word “thanks” is in the name, “Thanks”giving, showing that the real purpose of the holiday is to get people to be thankful for what they have. A common tradition for many families during Thanksgiving is that during dinner, everyone goes around the table and lists what they’re thankful for. This exercise is not only a fun tradition, but also a good opportunity for people to consciously think about how much they have.

Along with the important lessons and morals it displays, Thanksgiving is also a time for good food and traditions. Across the US there are delicious foods that are eaten every season. These foods are often found only in North America, like the main dish at almost every home, Turkey, a bird found only in North America. There are also many different fun activities that occur every year, like the annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, the Westminster Dog Show, and a large array of professional NFL football games. These activities are entertaining and special to Thanksgiving, if people were to skip Thanksgiving they would miss these fun activities as well as the delicious food.

Some people might think that Thanksgiving makes them uncomfortable because it’s a holiday that revolves around the idea of family getting together, and not everyone has the best family history or experience. However, that doesn’t require skipping Thanksgiving. Rather than making it a family holiday, people could always spend Thanksgiving with their friends. They could still enjoy the holiday and all of the fun events and traditions.

Thanksgiving is a fun holiday, filled with an interesting history, a good moral lesson, and lots of good food and festive events. Yet many people jump straight from Halloween to Christmas, skipping Thanksgiving in the process. People need to celebrate this unique American holiday and enjoy the lesson of Thanksgiving, being thankful while celebrating with their friends and family.
